ECAT at RecSys 2024

At this year’s RecSys conference in Bari, ECAT researcher João Vinagre gave a keynote focusing on the implications of EU regulation for the RecSys Community.

The keynote was delivered at The 7th FAccTRec Workshop on Responsible Recommendation, part of the RecSys 2024 programme. This Workshop explores research and position papers about ethical, social, and legal issues brought by the development and the use of recommendations, to enable a discussion on providing and evaluating socially responsible recommendations. As this year’s RecSys took place in Europe, FAccTRec had a special focus on accountability in the context of recent EU legislation.

João provided participants with a technical perspective on the Digital Services Act and the AI Act, focusing on the principles behind them, as well as the implications for the RecSys community. He particularly zoomed in on the potential impact of the new regulations from a research perspective.

The official summary article about the workshop is available at the ACM Digital Library.
