The European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency (ECAT) team met with José Luis Escrivá, Spanish Minister of Digital Transformation and Civil Service, to discuss the importance of algorithmic transparency and cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The meeting highlighted the Spanish government's interest in ECAT's activities, particularly in the area of AI, and their willingness to learn from ECAT's knowledge to ensure the effective implementation of current and upcoming legistlation at both national and EU levels.
Alberto Pena Fernandez, Head of Unit on Algorithmic Transparency at the JRC, had the pleasure to present ECAT's work alongside Team Leaders Josep Garrido and Emilia Gomez, showcasing the centre's expertise in algorithmic transparency and the key results obtained so far. Minister Escrivá emphasized the need to build expertise in this area and was confident that ECAT could be pivotal in bridging knowledge gaps in this sector and facilitate cooperation among designated national authorities. The Minister also showed interest in ECAT's research areas, including inspections, minor protection, mental health, AI systemic risks, and talent attraction in the digital sphere.
This meeting marks an important step forward in promoting algorithmic transparency and responsible AI development in Europe, and ECAT looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Member States to achieve this goal.
