Safer Internet Day (SID) has been celebrated on the first Tuesday of February since it originated in 2004. In the two decades that have passed, the internet and its role in society have grown at a remarkable rate, and SID has evolved accordingly. At its core, however, it remains focused on raising awareness of online risks, and on providing tips and resources to help people stay safe.
This year, the Irish Internet Safety Awareness Centre, Webwise, hosted an event with the theme Prepare / Protect / Thrive: Navigating Algorithms and Influencers. The day included a wide variety of speakers, including the Irish Minister for Education and Youth, Helen McEntee, representatives from civil society and academia, as well as members of the Webwise Youth Panel.
ECAT also participated, with a presentation by our Deputy, Yves Punie, who focused on the impact of AI and algorithms on our everyday life, and how we can best understand opportunities and risks. You can watch his presentation below.
