As part of a series of articles highlighting women working in the AI field, Emilia Gómez, Lead Scientist at ECAT, was interviewed recently by TechCrunch. In the piece, Emilia explains she got started in the AI field as a developer of algorithms in the music field, which later led her to study the impact of AI on human behaviour – the focus of her research at the European Commission’s JRC.

Asked about a piece of work that makes her proud, she cites her and her team’s technical contributions to the AI Act, which include the translation between legal and technical terms, as well as assessment on the practical implementation of legal requirements. Emilia also mentions the team’s contribution to the EU AI liability directive, where they studied what makes an AI system inherently risky.

To other women looking to enter the AI field, Emilia’s advice is to go for it, as the field is in urgent need for diversity, and to look for mentors that support their journey.
