Alessia Tranchese

Dr Alessia Tranchese is Associate Professor of Language, Feminism and Digital Media at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Her research examines misogyny across language, media and technology, from news narratives to algorithms and AI systems that increasingly mediate everyday life. Her recent work explores AI-facilitated violence against women and the impact of male-dominated technological development on women’s freedom and safety. She has studied online misogyny in the manosphere, sex buyers’ reviews and pornography.

She is the author of From Fritzl to #MeToo: Twelve Years of Rape Coverage in the British Press, which traces how media narratives around sexual violence shifted before and after #MeToo. Dr Tranchese has developed a guide to improve media reporting of rape and has advised organisations including the European Commission, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls, and Ofcom. She regularly appears in outlets including the BBC, Channel 4 and the Frankfurter Allgemeine.
